World War 1 was one of the first conflicts to recieve full photographic coverage; every campaign and all the major battles were recorded by the cameras of the combatant nations. Not only was it the first truly modern war, the military and industrial systems of the major powers meeting head-on in a titanic collision, it was also global in scope, ranging from the trenches in the Western Front and the frozen wastes of Russia to the Arabian desert and the Pacific South Sea islands.
This book presents some 550 of the best photographs taken during World War 1, specially selected by the author to highlight the most important and the most poignant episodes of the war. All the major events are covered, including the Battle of the Somme, Gallipoli, Jutland and the arrival of US toops on the Western Front, and the Russian Revolution, as well as such specific subjects as Zepplin raids, the role of women in the war, and trench warfare techniques. The book is divided into chapters which, together with specially commissioned maps, provide a concise history of the conflict, and combine with the photographs to give a real impression of what it was like to live, work, fight and die in "the war to end all wars".
