Another excellent addition to the Putnam library which with this volume on Westland aircraft maintains their widelt recognised high standards.
For years, the Putnam library of aircraft makers biographies have set the world standard for aircraft books. This book on Westland keeps that standard intact.
Westland was one of a large number of British aircraft firms that grew out of industry that produced more aircraft in the First World War than any other nation.
While its first aircraft was too late to see action in the war, throughout the 20s and 30s it produced a wide variety of aircraft ranging from fighters to the famous Lysander liaison aircraft.
Like Bell in the United states (another small company that produced only two types in World War II), Westland bet its post-war future on the helicopters Whereas bell designed its own types, Westland offered UK produced variants of successful American Sikorsky designs. When the UK aero industry was rationalised, it became the de facto UK helicopter builder. Today, it's part of the Agusta group and is the major competitor to the huge French-German Eurocopter.
Following the established format of the Putnam series, the book offers a history of the firm. Then each aircraft developed by the company is , listed with its development history and service use, profusely illustarted by numerous photos and diagrams.
If you wish to learn about the history of the UK helicopter industry, this book will go a long way towards answering all your questions
