The Welkin was the RAF's answer to the high-altitude reconnaissance and occasional bombing raids carried out by the Luftwaffe's Ju 86 derivatives. Developed rapidly, by the time the Welkin was ready for service the threat had passed and nearly the entire fleet flew from the manufacturer to a maintenance Unit, from which they were eventually scrapped without seeing any service. A later development, the Mk. II had an additional crew member to operate the installed Airborne Intercept radar but never found a user.
