Covering the period 1830-1870, the author looks at the technological developments, the new type of professional sailor, the Royal Family's interest and activities in Navy matters and finally an account of sea power in action at that time. The book is profusely illustrated by prints and photographs from the Royal Naval Museum, many of them never previously published.
