This is the complete story of the US Navy’s submarine task force based in Brisbane, Australia, during World War II. Highly secret at the time, their activities remain little known even today, although their contributions to the war in the Pacific were significant. The book details the force’s actions, from the first boat’s arrival in the dark days of April 1942, to the base’s closure three years later. Drawing on the personal experiences of individual sailors, it describes heroic encounters with the enemy, clandestine special missions, plus training and R & R, and records the professional cooperation and personal friendships between Australians and Americans.
