James the Second of England and the Seventh of Scotland was a prince of firm integrity and strong religous faith. He temporarily commanded the French Army whilst acting as deputy to Turenne during the wars of the Fronde. Forced to leave French service, he joined the Spanish Army and witnessed the courage of the Cromwellian Army in action against his troops. Later, when King of England he commanded the English Army in the disastrous campaign of 1688. He is possibly best known as England's last Roman Catholic monarch, commanding the Irish Army which was defeated by the protestant King William at the Boyne in 1690. The book has an introduction by Sir Arthur Bryant. w/o DJ
