The autobiography of a leading soldier which covers much personal detail including his boyhood and early days in the army which he joined in 1908, his service during WW1 on the western front ending the war as GSO1, staff college at Camberley and service in Palestine and India before return to England in 1937 to command the 9th Infantry Brigade, the death of his wife and in 1939 WW2 and command of 3rd Division, service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Arnhem and the Ardennes with progressive advancements, the text includes much of his correspondence with General Eisenhower and also covers his final years in post-war Europe as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in Europe
