The history of the bomber from the first World War to the 1980s. An account of the men who designed and flew them, the fighter pilots whose job was to shoot them down and the civilians who were on the receiving end. Detailed analysis of design breakthroughs and flaws, armaments and tactics, crucial operations and notable disasters are placed in the wider context of the moral and practical arguments on the proper use of strategic bombing, not only in the World Wars but in the inter-war and post 1945 years through to Vietnam.
