Notes on the mid-Victorian transformation in Battleship design which orignally appeared in 'The Mariner's Mirror'. The author researched the admiralty archives, accumulating technical information and detailed histories with which his work is replete. He includes expressive accounts of life on the mess decks of a broadside battleship, of casting and fishing an anchor, hoisting out boomboats and sending down topmasts.
