The campaigns and battles of the British and Imperial forces in South Africa, from the early skirmishes in the 1830s and 1840s, to the 1st and 2nd Boer Wars at the end of the 19th Century. Barthorp outlines Britain's attempts to deprive the Afrikaners of the independence they had striven for since the seventeenth century, not only during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 but also in earlier clashes since Britain had acquired the Cape of Good Hope in the Napoleonic War
