This was the first eyewitness account written of the famous raid in 1942. An officer in 5 Commando, the author was attached to the raiding force for the operation. The objective of the raid (Operation Chariot) was to block St Nazaire from being used as the only haven for German capital ships on the Atlantic coast. It resulted in success and the award of 5 VCs, the highest number for any single action in WWII.
