The course of Russia's Great Patriotic War from the point of view of the Russian troops and the ordinary people. It is believed that more than 20 million soldiers and civilians died between June, 1941 and May, 1945. The author recounts the conflict from the Hitler-Stalin pact, through Operation Barbarossa, to the great series of Soviet victories which resulted in half of Europe coming under Soviet domination for half a century.
