During the first 30 years of the last century the Russian people overthrew the autocracy of the Czars only to find themselves delivered up to another tyranny. It was a political cataclysm whose consequences still affect us today. The same years produced pervasive changes in art and literature. The artistic influence of Russia's creative explosion has been as profound as the political effects of the revolution. The author looks at Nicholas II, Rasputin, Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin with Diaghilev, and the cultural icons Kandinsky, Blok, Bely, Chagall and Gorky
