Roman military equipment consisted of standardized weapons, armor, and marching gear designed for heavy infantry combat and long-range logistics.
Weapons
- Gladius: A short, double-edged primary stabbing sword used for close-quarters combat.
- Pilum: A heavy iron-tipped throwing javelin designed to bend upon impact so the enemy could not reuse it.
- Hasta: A thrusting spear used in formation fighting.
- Pugio: A leaf-shaped or broad combat dagger worn on the belt as a backup weapon.
- Spatha: A longer cutting sword that replaced the gladius during the later imperial era.
Armor and Protection
- Lorica Segmentata: Articulated metal bands across the torso that provided flexible protection.
- Lorica Hamata: Traditional mail armor made of thousands of interlinked metal rings.
- Lorica Squamata: Scale armor made from overlapping small metal or horn scales.
- Galea: A metal helmet featuring cheek-pieces and a neck guard.
- Scutum: A large, curved rectangular or oval shield that protected the body during formations like the testudo (tortoise wall).
Clothing and Footwear
- Tunica: A wool or linen tunic worn under the armor.
- Caligae: Heavy leather sandals fitted with iron hobnails on the soles for traction and durability on the march.
- Sagum / Paenula: A heavy woolen cloak or hooded cape used for cold and rainy weather.
Marching Gear and Tools
- Sarcina: The standardized marching pack carried by each soldier ("Marius's mules") containing rations, cooking pots, and personal items.
- Dolabra: A combined pickaxe and mattock used for digging camp trenches and fortifications.
- Wooden Stakes: Two pointed stakes carried for quickly building defensive perimeter fences.
