The German Defensive Battles on the Russian Front, 1944. The entire Russo-German front was under continual Soviet attacks, and wrong estimations by the highest German command had grave consequences. The Red Army, growing increasingly stronger, launched a major offensive engaging the Germans in a series of battles - Cherkassy, Tarnopol, Crimea, Vetebsk, Brody, Jassy - which ended in the collapse of Army Group Center, and cost the German army in the east well over half a million casualties. The book tells the story from the German point of view, reflecting on some of the most barbarous fighting of World War II.
