On the 20th of August 1959 the prototype Victor Mk. 2 disappeared during flight trials over the Irish Sea. The recovery operation involved more than 40 ships and 4,000 men and women and at that time was the greatest salvage operation undertaken. Eventually 70 percent of the airframe was recovered and allowed the Royal Aircraft Establishment to be reasonably satisfies in the cause of the accident.
