In 1898 General Kitchener massed his troops in Cairo and set off into the desert with an army which included the Grenadier Guards, the Rifle Brigade, the Highlanders and the Camel Corps. When the army reached Omdurman the 21st Lancers undertook the last great cavalry charge in history. It was a memorable battle, one of the young officers leading it being Winston Churchill.
