The author was the wife of a retired diplomat (who had resigned from the Diplomatic Service in 1933). This is her account of living in the apocalyptic Berlin of 1945 and the first years of Russian occupation 1946 during which her husband taken in the night by the Secret Police never to return. Written from the point of view of a cultivated, privileged background, suddenly assaulted by the collapse of order and the barbaric invasion.
