The scrapping of Britain's Nimrod programme has been one of the most disgraceful events in British military aviation history. For most of its operational life, from 1969, its contribution to the defence of the UK and its role in offensive duties was invaluable. It was the ‘eye in the sky’ which was absolutely vital to a host of activities – from anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, to support of land battles. From the Falklands campaign, to combating drug-running, and action in Iraq, the Nimrod’s role was paramount. Now the UK is bereft of this magnificent, multi-tasking reconnaissance aircraft. The author's conclusions will not be welcomed by those in power.
