A detailed account of Napoleon's ten-week campaign in Palestine and Syria in 1799, with eyewitness accounts by participants on all sides. Napoleon launched his offensive from his base in Egypt, captured Gaza and stormed Jaffa, resulting in a massacre of the defenders. His troops were halted by Ottoman and British forces at Acre, and a protracted and bloody siege resulted. With his troops decimated by bubonic plague Napoleon eventually abandoned the expedition.
