The embodiment of the American dream, Colin Powell was born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica. The book follows his early years, going to Church with his father, working in a bottling plant and joining the ROTC. His first Foreign posting as a Lieutenant was to Germany, and then to Vietnam where he was wounded. He progressed to the dangerous thickets of Washington bureacracy as a Pentagon aide in the Carter administration. Colin Powell moving easily between the Army and High positions in both republican and democratic administrations has a unique perspective on political and military life.
