An account of the battles for the mediaeval Italian monastry of Monte Cassino during February 1944. The abbey commanded the valley below, halting the Allied armies on their advance on Rome. The destruction of the Benedictine Monastery was one of the most difficult ethical decisions ever occasioned by war. The American general, Mark Clark, argued passionately that the bombing was needless, but eventually succumbed to pressure from British General Harold Alexander and New Zealand General Bernard Freyberg.
