Johann Dietz was a surgeon in the army of the Great Elector, Frederick William of Brandenburg, Duke of Prussia, and was Barber to the Royal Court. Surviving the plague in childhood he saw service as an army surgeon in two campaigns, the first against the Turks besieging Budapest, and the second in the service of the King of Denmark. He later made two trips to the Arctic on Whaling ships before retiring with a royal warrant.
