FRENCH TEXT. On Tuesday June 6, 1944, 150,000 American, Canadian and British soldiers landed on the Normandy beaches. Beside them were a handful of Frenchmen, the 177 green berets commanded by Lt Philippe Kieffer. These French troops were the first to set foot on the soil of the liberated homeland. After the tragic evacuation of Dunkirk, the tragedy of Mers el-Kébir and the scuttling of the fleet in Toulon some had crossed the Pyrenees on foot; others fought in Narvik or responded to the appeal launched by General de Gaulle to fight for France. Following relentless training alongside British commandos they had launched daring raids on the coasts of occupied France.
