Book Overview

The Kempeitai was the military police arm of the Imperial Japanese Army from 1881 until the end of World War II in 1945, often likened to Nazi Germany's Gestapo for its ruthless and autonomous power.

Origins and Structure

• Founded: Established in 1881 during the Meiji era, modelled largely after France's National Gendarmerie.
• Growth: What began as an elite, educated unit expanded drastically during Japanese militarism and World War II, reaching roughly 70,000 members by 1945 across Japan and its occupied territories.
• Jurisdiction: Operating with near-complete autonomy, they answered to military command but functioned simultaneously as a brutal domestic and imperial secret police force.

Core Duties and Operations

• Thought Control & Censorship: Alongside the civilian Tokkō (Special Higher Police), they suppressed anti-Japanese sentiment, enforced ideological conformity, and censored public speech.
• Occupied Territories: In regions like China, Southeast Asia, Malaya, and the Pacific Islands, they managed travel permits, labor and food requisitions, and local auxiliary recruitment (including Korean and Taiwanese personnel).
• Atrocities & Exploitation: They played a direct role in procuring "comfort women" for the military and supplying human test subjects to Unit 731. They also oversaw prisoner-of-war (POW) and civilian internment camps.
• Counter-Espionage: They tracked down resistance movements and spies (such as Gurchan Singh's underground network in Malaya). Infamous actions include the Sook Ching massacre and the Double Tenth incident in Singapore.

Methods

• No Habeas Corpus: Suspects had no right to a trial or legal defence; arrest equalled an automatic presumption of guilt.
• Systematic Torture: Interrogations took place in total secrecy and routinely used severe physical and psychological torture, including waterboarding, electric shocks, beatings, burning, and limb dislocation.

Post-War Aftermath

• Disbandment: The organization was formally dissolved following Japan's surrender in 1945.
• War Crimes Trials: Many high-ranking leaders and officers were captured, tried, and sentenced to death or life imprisonment, though some managed to evade major prosecution or later re-integrated into post-war Japanese society, business, and politics.

The only book available on wartime Japan's secret police. Contains first-hand accounts from former members and their victims, and identifies former high-ranking Kempeitai officers who became prominent businessmen and politicians.
