Foreword by Air Commodore L "Grid" Caldwell CBE, MC, DFC & Bar, RFC, RAF, RNZAF, (Retd.)
One of the RAF's most famous fighter squadrons, No. 74 first came to prominence in World War One flying S.E. 5a fighters over the Western Front. Re-born for the defence of London, it became one of the early Spitfire squadrons at Hornchurch, with 'Sailor' Malan as a founder member. In 1960 it became the RAF's first truly supersonic squadron when it re-equipped with the English Electric Lightning.
