Captured in 1914 by the Germans, he made repeated attempts to escape.Devastated by Typhus he recovered to compete in the 1924 Olympics in Paris. He took part in the Allied intervention in Russia after WWI. During the Dunkirk evacuation he commanded a Battalion, He was badly wounded in 1943 in North Africa where he was badly wounded but within a year he was pushing across Europe as Commander of XXX Corps from Normandy to Germany with 200,000 men under his command.
