This is the first comprehensive guide in English to the defences of Hitler's Siegfried Line. Stretching from the Swiss border in the south to Kleve in the north, it protected Germany's entire western frontier. In places the defenses were up to twenty miles deep and constructed to deter or delay enemy attacks. Known as the West Wall, it was built in the late 1930s and at times the project employed some 500,000 workers. After the fall of France the line was neglected and many of the weapons were re-used on the Atlantic Wall.
