Alexander Haig achieved the rank of General and was appointed Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, having commanded no military unit larger than a Brigade. He had no practical experience of diplomacy, yet he was at the centre of American foreign policy. He was involved in the Watergate scandal but retained office under the next three Presidents until his resignation as US Secretary of State in July 1982.
