This is a book to show Gibson as a human and not the permanently dashing hero portrayed so magnificently by Richard Todd in the film; but it is not a hatchet job. It does not try and cast Gibson as a villain and to say this is a 'warts and all' book would be a disservice. Instead it is simply the man behind the myth. Perhaps not a brilliant pilot, nor completely at ease with men of a different background to him, but an excellent battlefield leader and very humane.
Read this in conjuction with the uncensored version of Enemy Coast Ahead and you will come away with a deepened respect for his achievements and an understanding of his limitations.
