This magnificent new book from the author(signed) of ‘Tugs and Gliders to Arnhem’ examines the role of the Royal Air Force & the Royal Army Service Corps Air Despatchers & their parachute re-supply sorties, during Operation ‘Market’. The RAF flew the air despatchers to their re-supply drop points. They were tasked to drop their panniers over the DZ in the shortest possible time, & both did their utmost to supply the airborne troops behind enemy lines. Between 18 & 25 September 1944, Stirlings & Dakotas of Nos. 38 & 46 Groups flew 628 sorties to the ‘Arnhem/Oosterbeek area’. Eighty nine aircraft did not return to base but, with the help of Dutch people & the resistance many air crew evaded capture. Others endured captivity in German POW camps, but many paid the ultimate price. Apart from hundreds of photographs & maps, there is a separate comprehensive index of those who took part, plus numerous appendices & tables. Although new this copy has sustained some damage to the covers.
