In Britain, Europe, the Western Desert and  the Far East, throughout the Second World  War, fighter pilots were ready to ‘Scramble’ at a moment's notice to repel enemy attacks  of fighters, bombers or unmanned flying  bombs. This book is their story, but it is also  the story of the hundreds of men and women  who worked, often under seemingly impossible conditions, to keep the fighters in  the air. Told through the reminiscences of  Servicemen who survived the ordeal, but  also relating the stories of many whose  devotion to duty cost them their lives, this  real life drama captures the valour, the  hardships and the humour of a fighter airfield  at war.
