The Epic of Flight series was perhaps Time Life's greatest achievement, a definite high point in mass market book publishing. A major effort was made to obtain archive photographs and other period material, as is evident in this book which describes the pioneering flights made by Alcock and Brown, Wiley Post, Bert Hinkler and others in the period between the two world wars, which laid the groundwork for the later military and commercial exploitation of aviation, particularly in the development of techniques for navigation over water. The book succeeds in bringing the subject to life, highlighting the enormous risks involved as well as the showbusiness glamour and huge public interest in aviation at this time, without sacrificing technical detail-a fine balancing act. This is a visually attractive book with some good contemporary artwork and colour cutaway illustrations of aircraft.
