First published in 1944, during the war, and recounts his experiences as an officer, writing mercilessly about everyday life and the hardships aboard a corvette. On the first corvette, he is a "Subby," then on the next, "Number One," meaning First Officer, and on the last, he is the Commanding Officer. It truly describes what it's like to never dry off in the Atlantic, to be afraid to go belowdecks after your watch for fear that the ship will be torpedoed and you'll drown miserably as a prisoner. There's no hatred or jingoism here. It's a sober portrayal of what it's like. This would never have been possible in Germany. A great book! (Amazon review).
