Previous owner name on title page. A Battleground guide by Peter Oldham designed for both the battlefield visitor and the armchair traveller. The historical significance of each site is described in detail with the aid of maps and photographs. The Hindenburg Line/Siegfriedstellung was the strongest defence system that the world had ever seen. Expertly fortified by the German Army, it was pierced in 1917 at Cambrai. Improved with deeper defences and new "elastic" tactics, it was again broken in the last months of the war.
