A Battleground guide by Andrew Rawson designed for both the battlefield visitor and the armchair traveller. The historical significance of each site is described in detail with the aid of maps and photographs. The Battle of Loos was part of a wider British and French offensive in September, 1915. Due to a lack of available artillery, a massive chlorine gas attack preceded the assault however all did not go to plan. Despite many waves of attacks very few troops made it as far as the German trenches and the assault was called off after a few days at the cost of 60,000 British casualties.
