Once in a while you are fortunate to come across an author who is an absolute master of his subject. In terms of naval aviation, Kenneth Poolman is such. In this book Mr Poolman is at his very best .It is superbly written & describes, in very great detail, the genesis & development of the Escort Carrier from humble beginnings to being a very real substitute for fleet carriers, in every sense of the word. Every campaign in which these great little ships fought. From the Arctic to the Atlantic, from the Med to the Pacific, it is all there. The book is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of photographs and line drawings of one example of each of classes described. There are also numerous illustrations of the various aircraft carried. The appendices list every scratch built & converted ship with details of the donor vessel as appropriate. A bonus is a pen portrait of Japanese Merchant Carrier conversion. If Mr Poolman has missed anything, I don't know what it is. Given the choice of only one book on the subject, this has to be it, by a very long way.
