Based on the letters of Andrey Sinyavsky written under his pen name to his wife. They were written during his imprisonment in a Soviet Forced Labour camp between 1966 and 1971. Because of the strict censorship on what prisoners were allowed to write the letters contain only oblique references to the conditions in the camp, instead we follow the authors inner thoughts and reflections on a wide range of topics in miniature essays from such things as Russian icons, the Russian Criminal world, Byzantine Enmperors and the writings of Swift and Defoe amongst many others.
