George Washington's forgotten general. With the outbreak of war in 1775 Howe was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina Regiment, later becoming commanding general of the Southern Department. His forces were defeated by the British in Savannah in December 1778 and he rode north to join Washington's army. As division commander in the New York Highlands he participated in the defence of West Point. He presided over the courts-martial of Generals Benedict Arnold and Alexander McDougall.
