If you want a very good & solid introduction to the rise and fall* of the Airborne then you could do a whole lot worse. As the Author covers very well the start of vertical envelopment with the Soviets in the 30's and the copying by the Germans. (German Airborne Units were some of the best troops that Hitler had who were wasted at Crete and Thank God were not used on Malta)
This is followed by the copy cat British and American Forces. Who used them when they invaded hostile shores with mixed results. (Market Garden and Sicily being on the less than outstanding ledger to the excellent use of them at Normandy) The book also covers the use of Airborne in the other theatres of the war. Altogether it makes for good reading and the maps and illustrations are first rate and very useful.

* The Fall being caused by the huge expense of Airborne and the large number of non combat injuries when the troops land. That and the draining away of high quality troops to elite units from "Leg" (Non Airborne) units was much resented. (Amazon review)

Since common core has taken our history out of the classroom, these Ballantine series books are pure gold for non-political correct history. Just the facts presented in an easy to read and understand form.
