It was the first military triplane to see operational service. The Triplane joined Royal Naval Air Service squadrons in early 1917 and was immediately successful. It was nevertheless built in comparatively small numbers and was withdrawn from active service as Sopwith Camels arrived in the latter half of 1917. Surviving Triplanes continued to serve as operational trainers until the end of the war.

The Triplane began as a private venture by the Sopwith Aviation Company. The fuselage and empennage closely mirrored those of the earlier Pup, but chief engineer Herbert Smith gave the new aircraft three narrow-chord wings to provide the pilot with an improved field of view. Ailerons were fitted to all three wings. By using the variable incidence tailplane, the aircraft could be trimmed to fly hands-off.[2] The introduction of a smaller 8 ft span tailplane in February 1917 improved elevator response.[3]

The Triplane was initially powered by the 110 hp Clerget 9Z nine-cylinder rotary engine, but most production examples were fitted with the 130 hp Clerget 9B rotary. One observer noted that the aircraft looked like "a drunken flight of steps" when rolling.[7]

In July 1916, N500 was sent to Dunkirk for evaluation with "A" Naval Squadron, 1 Naval Wing. It proved highly successful. The second prototype, serial N504, was fitted with a 130 hp Clerget 9B. N504 first flew in August 1916 and was eventually sent to France in December.[8] This aircraft served as a conversion trainer for several squadrons.[8]

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1022/1289/5019/files/the-sopwith-triplane-profile-73-with-added-value-information-pack_10502_main_original.jpg?v=1791211770
dornier-do-17-do-215-profile-164-with-added-value-information-pack-incl-full-cutaway
DORNIER Do 17 & Do 215: PROFILE #164 with ADDED VALUE INFORMATION PACK incl. The Do 17 made its combat debut in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, operating in the Condor Legion in various roles. Along with the Heinkel He 111 it was the main bomber type of the German air arm in 1939–1940. The Dornier was used throughout the early war, and saw action in significant numbers in every major campaign theatre as a front line aircraft until the end of 1941, when its effectiveness and usage was curtailed as its bomb load and range were limited.

Production of the Dornier ended in mid-1940, in favour of the newer and more powerful Junkers Ju 88. The successor of the Do 17 was the much more powerful Dornier Do 217, which started to appear in strength in 1942. Even so, the Do 17 continued service in the Luftwaffe in various roles until the end of the war, as a glider tug, research and trainer aircraft. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engine.[4] From the end of 1941, the Bf 109 was steadily being supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. It was commonly called the Me 109, most often by Allied aircrew and even among the German aces themselves, even though this was not the official German designation.[5]

It was designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser, who worked at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke during the early to mid-1930s.[4] Whilst the 109 was conceived as an interceptor, later models were developed to fulfill multiple tasks, serving as bomber escort, fighter-bomber, day-, night-, all-weather fighter, ground-attack aircraft, and as reconnaissance aircraft. It was supplied to and operated by several states during World War II, and served with several countries for many years after the war. The Bf 109 is the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 33,984 airframes produced from 1936 up to April 1945.[2][3]

The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring German fighter aces of World War II, who claimed 928 victories among them while flying with Jagdgeschwader 52, mainly on the Eastern Front. The highest scoring fighter ace of all time, Erich Hartmann, flew the Bf 109 and was credited with 352 aerial victories. The aircraft was also flown by Hans-Joachim Marseille, the highest-scoring German ace in the North African Campaign, who achieved 158 aerial victories. It was also flown by several other aces from Germany's allies, notably the Finn Ilmari Juutilainen, the highest scoring non-German ace on the type, and pilots from Italy, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and Hungary. Through constant development, the Bf 109 remained competitive with the latest Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war.[6]

By the end of the war, a significant fraction of Bf 109 production originated in concentration camps, including Flossenbürg, Mauthausen-Gusen, and Buchenwald.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1022/1289/5019/files/messerschmitt-bf-109e-profile-40-augmented-with-added-value-pack_10517_main_original.jpg?v=1791211879
focke-wulf-fw-190a-profile-3-18-pages-added-value-information-pack-incl-cutaways-p
FOCKE-WULF Fw 190A: PROFILE #3/ 18 PAGES + ADDED VALUE INFORMATION PACK incl. Designed by Alexander Lippisch, it is the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever to have been operational and the first piloted aircraft of any type to exceed 1000 km/h (621 mph) in level flight. Its performance and aspects of its design were unprecedented. German test pilot Heini Dittmar in early July 1944 reached 1,130 km/h (700 mph), an unofficial flight airspeed record unmatched by turbojet-powered aircraft for almost a decade. Over 300 Komets were built, but the aircraft proved ineffective in its dedicated role as an interceptor and destroyed about 9 to 18 Allied aircraft against 10 losses.[3][4] Aside from combat losses many pilots were killed during testing and training.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1022/1289/5019/files/messerschmitt-me-163-komet-profile-225-with-added-value-pack-cutaway-download_10562_main_original.jpg?v=1791212214
me-210-410-series-profile-161-6-new-pages-cutaway-download
Me 210-410 SERIES PROFILE #161: 6 NEW PAGES + CUTAWAY/ DOWNLOAD

Author: Richard J Smith + Various

Publisher: profile Publications + Various

Pagination: 18

Format: Digital

Profile Publications

A series, first published in the 1960s, of over 200 booklets in b&w with colour illustrations. Such coincidences do not always merit a full-length history, but Sir Alan's achievements as one of the great pioneering aviators, and the considerable importance of the company he created, make "In Cobhams' Company" a fascinating account of a company which today holds a pre-eminent position in the modern aircraft industry. Due in part to his use of the company archives the author has brought it vividly to life, incorporating more than 250 photographs and drawings, many of which have never been published before.

Foreword by Marshal of The Royal Air Force Sir Michael Beetham.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1022/1289/5019/files/in-cobhams-company-60-years-of-flight-refuelling-new-1994-signed-1st-edition_11704_main_original.jpg?v=1791220029
stuka-at-war
Stuka at War

Author: Peter C Smith

Publisher: Ian Allen

First Edition

Pagination: 192

Format: Hardback + DJ

Dimensions: 24 x 16 x 2 cm

Here is the story of the Stuka that changed aerial warfare, dominated land warfare and challenged maritime warfare.
